Joshua Coyne

Position: Instructor/Advisor

Rank: 4th Degree Black Belt

Began training with KI in April 2000.
Obtained Black Belt in December 2003.

Josh earned the rank of Sandan (3^rd Degree) in May 2006. He began study of the martial arts in July of 1987 at the age of 11. Over the last 23 years Josh has studied Tae Kwon Do, Matsukaze Budo Kai (Traditional Okinawan Karate), Shotokan, U.S. Army Self-Defense (served from 1994-1998) and Sanshinkai. Josh began training with KI in April of 2000 and earned his black belt in December 2003. Josh is a member of the AMAA Board of Directors and is an AMAA Certified Instructor. Josh and his wife Dawn owned and operated KI Wallburg from April 2005 until their first son was born in April 2007. While serving as Chief Instructor of KI Wallburg, Josh received the AMAA Instructor of the Year Award for 2006 for leading KI Wallburg to 4 consecutive State Championships. Josh continues to train under Grand Master Williams and now teaches the Advanced Classes for KI Midway. Josh earned his Bachelor’s in Accounting in 2004 and his Master’s in Accounting in 2006, both from UNC-Greensboro. Josh works in Strategic Sourcing at BB&T and sits on the Board of Directors for DePaul Adult Care Communities. Since 2005 he has held various sourcing and finance positions at Reynold’s American, Inc. and GMAC Insurance. Josh and Dawn have been married for 12 years and have 2 sons, Cooper and Tyler .

Philip Kennedy

Katrina Rose

1^st Degree Black Instructor (Lil' Dragons Program)

Discovered karate after being encouraged to try it from a friend. She began studying martial arts with KI Midway in 2008.She is currently a co-instructor for the Little Dragons program.

She graduated from both North Carolina State and High Point University. During the day, she is a math teacher at West Davidson High School. More importantly, she is a wife and mother of two wonderful and supportive children (Alex 13 and Rachel 11).

Thomas was born February 29, 2000 (Leap day), and started training at KI Midway in February 2009 at age 8.  He is a student at North Davidson Middle School as an Honor Roll student, and is in the accelerated program. His favorite subject is Social Studies.  He won the Drug Abuse Resistant Education essay in his class. His goal is to become a 10th degree black belt (O’ Sensei).

Robert started training at KI Midway in the summer of 2009.  He is on the A/B Honor Roll  an  his favorite subject is computers. He wants to become a robotics engineer. Apart from school and karate, he likes learning programming, wrestling, guitar, piano and playing video games.

Kathy Sweeny

 1st Degree Black Belt

Kathy has trained with KI Midway since May of 2008.  She has been married to her husband Will for 15 yearsand is currently home schooling her sons, Lucas and Joshua.  She serves on many different groups in our community and has traveled abroad to serve on short term missions teams. Kathy enjoys teaching the Little Dragons at KI Midway as well as assisting in the other classes.  When she is not at the dojo she enjoys quilting, teaching Community Bible Study, serving at her church and working in ministries such as Encouragement Café Ministries ( www.encouragementcafe.com ) and International Orphan Care ministries - VisionTrust International (www.visiontrust.org) .

Rachel Rose

 1st Degree Black Belt

Rachel started training three years ago when she was 8 years old. She currently attends 6th grade at North Davidson Middle School. Her favorite subject is math. She is an A honor roll student and an active member in a girls scout troop. She hopes to one day be a famous musician or an artist. She would like to thank all the instructors that encouraged and helped her along the way.

Alex Upton-

1st Degree Black Belt

Alex Upton started training at KI Midway in November 2008 at 7 years old. He is now 10 years old and currently in 5th grade at Welcome Elementary School. He is an A/B Honor Roll student. He hopes to run his own movie making studio and to animate movies.

Brandon Hodgin

Brandon started training at KI Midway in the summer of 2008 when he was nine years old. He is an A/B Honor Roll student and a previous Presidential Award recipient.

Michael Bradshaw

Michael Bradshaw started training at KI Midway in January at the age of 12. He is an Eagle Scout with Troop 207. He is also an A-B Honor Roll Student, and his favorite subject is Social Studies. He hopes to become a sailboat captain.
